Job Description:

The Blake School seeks to hire an exceptional leader in social studies education as a PK-12 Social Studies Department Chair. The department offers students multiple avenues for developing inquiry and critical thinking skills, including interdisciplinary courses and experiences, project-based learning, and historical study. Lower School students explore civic engagement by studying topics ranging from community changemakers to local watersheds to key moments in American history. Middle School students experience a year-long humanities course and undertake team-based projects and presentations about real-world issues. Upper School students hone their research skills and choose from a broad range of electives, including Race and Class, Global Theories: Local Realities, and Constitutional Studies. Throughout, students practice the skills, attitudes, and habits of mind that develop global and intercultural competence.

Curricular and Programmatic Leadership

  • Assess the scope and efficacy of the current curriculum and identify opportunities to amplify and extend opportunities for all students.

  • Collaborate with department faculty to oversee the evolution and alignment of the curriculum, consistent with Blake’s mission.

  • Collaborate with other department chairs and with division directors to design, coordinate and integrate course content and offerings.

  • Teach up to two class sections, rotating divisions when possible.

  • Design PK-12 and divisional department meetings.

  • Represent the department’s program on school committees.

  • Oversee department budget.

 

Faculty Support and Evaluation

  • Build community and collegiality by being a reliable presence across campuses and divisions.

  • Develop a deep understanding of the curriculum through one-on-one conversations, classroom observations, department meetings and a careful review of current courses.

  • Envision and support professional development for faculty so that each teacher can effectively implement a wide range of best-practice instructional and assessment strategies.

  • Collaborate closely with administrators on hiring, retaining, coaching, and evaluating department faculty.

 

Institutional & Community Partnerships

  • Collaborate with Admissions and Communications Departments to share with constituents and prospective families the department’s philosophy, vision, and offerings.

  • Develop and maintain connections with relevant programs, institutions, and thought leaders in the Twin Cities and beyond.

 

 

Experience and Skills:

The ideal candidate will have experience teaching at multiple divisions (preferably in a number of social studies sub-disciplines), deep emotional intelligence, and a passion for sharing best practice pedagogy in the field. Department chairs work closely with division directors and report directly to the Associate Head of School. Blake is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, lived experience and thinking that makes our community strong and empowers students to engage across differences.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a social studies sub-discipline.

  • Strong preference for advanced degree or work toward an advanced degree in a relevant field.

  • Substantial professional experience in social studies education.

  • Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to learning about best practices in social studies pedagogy.

  • Demonstrated ability to coach and evaluate faculty.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets.
