Job Description:

Position Overview:

 

The Blake School places great emphasis on ensuring a welcoming and safe environment for all students, staff, community members and visitors. The Lead Security Officer will lead a team of five security officers across three campuses. They will ensure security policies, processes and procedures are implemented in a timely manner. They will train and mentor their team and will play an integral role in crisis management planning, incident response and resolution. The Lead Security Officer will also be the primary Security Officer for the Upper School campus. They will represent the Security Department to the Blake Community. It is critical that they are friendly, approachable, professional, authoritative and dress appropriately for the role.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Mentor five Blake Security Officers (BSO’s).

  • Develop and conduct training for the BSO’s.

  • Provide security recommendations to Blake administration.

 

Program Management

  • Work with the Director to implement Security department’s strategic plan.

  • Assist in the development of emergency procedures for each campus.

  • Build partnerships with First Responders.

  • Participate in table top emergency exercises.

 

Security Access

  • Greet and welcome visitors and guests to the campus.

  • Monitor entrances, gates, exterior doors and prohibit entry of unauthorized personnel.

  • Observe arrival and departure of students, faculty and staff.

  • Provide escorts for visitors as needed.

  • Secure campus and protect students and staff by patrolling property; monitoring surveillance equipment; inspecting buildings, equipment, and entry access points.

  • Maintain good records.

 

Security Services

  • Implementate emergency procedures as needed.

  • Schedule, coordinate, and monitor evacuation, lockdown and severe weather drills.

  • Provide training to teachers and staff as necessary.

  • Conduct traffic control at the beginning and end of school day.

  • Conduct safety checks.

  • Monitor crowds during athletic events and other large gatherings to ensure orderly behavior and a safe and welcoming environment.

Experience and Skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Required:

  • 3+ years of supervisory experience.

  • Project management and change management experience.

  • Conflict resolution skills - good listener, demonstrates empathy.

  • Customer service skills - ability to interact with visitors, students and parents in a friendly and professional manner.

  • Interculturally competent - "has the ability to understand the experiences of people from diverse communities and the capability to adapt one’s mindset and behavior to bridge across difference." (Mitchell R. Hammer, 2011).

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong observation skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to be discreet.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • The ability to remain calm during emergencies and implement emergency procedures.

  • CPR, First Aid and First Responder certified.

  • Ability to work flexible hours.

  • Ability to pass physical fitness test.

 

Desired:

  • 15+ years of law enforcement, first responder or school security experience.

  • Experience in executing a training program.

  • Experience in conflict resolution.

  • Advanced security or first responder training.

  • Professional certifications.

 

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to run short distances

  • Ability to stand for long period of time

  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds

  • Ability to perform duties in extreme weather conditions.

  • Ability to evacuate school children and adults in emergency situations.

  • Must have visual and auditory observation capabilities

  • Ability to pass physical fitness test.
