Job Description:

The Blake School seeks to hire a part-time (0.5 FTE) Upper School Chinese teacher with native or near-native Chinese language proficiency, capable of teaching all levels of Upper School Chinese (including heritage speakers and an AP-level course) for the 2019-2020 school year.  This is a benefits-eligible position and is one year only, with the possibility of continued employment. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in second language acquisition, successful high school classroom experience in a 100 percent target-language environment and a student-centered pedagogy. Candidates should be passionate about sharing their love of languages with students. Blake is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, lived experience and thinking that makes a community strong and empowers students to engage across differences.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications on December 3. Blake will typically cover the travel and lodging costs for finalist candidates visiting from out of town.

Experience and Skills:

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate:

  • curriculum design, assessments and instruction driven by ACTFL standards and language proficiency targets,

  • 100% use of target language in the classroom,

  • experience with a variety of teaching strategies,

  • training in the teaching of a world language and knowledge of essential concepts of Second Language Acquisition,

  • native or near-native language skills,

  • involvement in ongoing professional development,

Because this position requires collaborative work with faculty in and out of the Modern and Classical Languages Department, excellent interpersonal skills and strong organizational ability are a must. Candidates should be ready to engage fully with the community-based experience of an independent school. We are looking for a positive, enthusiastic and proactive educator, capable of enriching a meaningful curriculum that will engage students in relevant, age-appropriate communicative tasks and that will lead learners to advance to a high level of proficiency in Chinese.
