Job Description:

The Blake School seeks a creative and engaged Middle School Social Studies/Humanities teacher who is eager to help students construct their own meanings as they learn to read and write with imagination, passion and insight. This is a full-time position (1.0 FTE) for the 2019-2020 school year. In middle school classes, students learn by doing. They read, they write, they discuss, they reconsider, they take action. Through this recursive process, they develop facility with language, find value in divergent perspectives, express themselves creatively in a variety of modes, and develop skills in telling stories, explaining complex ideas, analyzing controversial issues and presenting original interpretations. Nurturing the growth of responsible global citizens requires teachers who help to connect reading, writing and inquiry to the study of self, others and the world. The successful candidate will be one with a strong foundation in history or a related social science field who is excited to share their passion for historical research, has experience or interest in using Socratic Seminar and project-based learning in the social studies classroom, and demonstrates a commitment to skills-based assessments. Teachers at Blake collaborate with their colleagues to develop their practice, design new curricula and create a coherent experience for students. Blake is interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, lived experience and thinking that makes our community strong and empowers our students to engage across differences.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications immediately. Blake will typically cover the travel and lodging costs for finalist candidates visiting from out of town.
