Job Description:

The Blake School is looking for a dedicated and engaged Middle School Learning Specialist to join our outstanding and increasingly diverse community for the 2020-21 school year. A minimum of an undergraduate degree with a minor in special education is required; an advanced degree or work toward an advanced degree specializing in special education is preferred. Reporting to the Middle School Director and working in close collaboration with the Director of Learning Support Services, the successful candidate will be energized by working with middle school students, will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and will model and support the mission of the Blake School. The learning specialist will be responsible for supporting students and teachers through direct instruction, compensatory strategies and accommodations. Primary responsibilities include managing a caseload of sixth to eighth grade students, developing accommodation plans based on the interpretation of psycho-educational evaluations, communicating with parents and teachers student needs and progress, and collaborating with teachers, other support staff and administrators to ensure the success of each student. Other responsibilities include maintaining documentation, researching best practice and latest methods in special education – including implementation of assistive technology – and collaborating with lower and upper school constituencies to ensure the smooth transition of students within divisions. Blake is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, lived experience and thinking that makes our community strong and empowers students to engage productively with those who are different from them. Blake offers highly competitive salary and benefits packages, as well as significant support for local and national professional development opportunities.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications December 1. Blake will typically cover the travel and lodging costs for finalist candidates visiting from out of town.

Experience and Skills:

The Blake School is a pre-kindergarten through grade 12, co-educational, nonsectarian, independent day school enrolling 1,367 bright, talented students from nearly 56 Twin Cities-area communities. Founded in 1900, The Blake School has the advantage of three campuses (Minneapolis, Hopkins and Wayzata) each with its own facilities designed for specific ages, schedules and activities. The mission of the school is to provide students with an excellent, academically challenging education in a diverse and supportive community committed to a common set of values.

The Blake School believes that a diverse society enriches all individuals and communities. Diversity of race, ethnicity, national origin, geography, religion, gender, affectional or sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and marital, parental or economic status forms the fabric of our society. As a result of these beliefs, The Blake School actively seeks students, families and employees who value and contribute to the fullness of a diverse community within the context of its mission. In doing so, we recognize our responsibility to help make each person's experience a success. EOE
