Job Description:

The Blake School seeks to hire a skilled and dynamic Upper School Reserve Teacher (grades 9-12). This is a full-time, temporary position beginning October 26 and ending December 18. The Reserve Teacher is responsible for providing substitute coverage for faculty absences as the primary on-call substitute. The Reserve Teacher collaborates with the Substitute Coordinator and reports to the division’s Assistant Director. In addition to experience teaching or tutoring adolescents in a school setting, strong candidates will demonstrate a joy for working with children, a commitment to intercultural competence, and strong written and verbal communication skills.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications immediately.

Experience and Skills:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • With direction from the division’s Substitute Coordinator, the Reserve Teacher serves as a first-line substitute for faculty absences in all subject areas, including advisories and study halls.
  • When covering a class, the Reserve Teacher takes attendance, enacts teaching plans and expectations provided by the absent faculty member, and ensures student safety.
  • Responds to emergent student needs in the classroom and notifies the appropriate dean, counselor, learning specialist, nurse, or divisional administrator as necessary.
  • Assists with communicating and enacting school policies and procedures related to health and safety, both in and out of the classroom.
  • Actively serves and affirms all identities represented at Blake and acts in accordance with the mission and values of the school.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Prior teaching, tutoring or substitute experience in schools, preferably in grades 6 - 12. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Warm, personable, professional demeanor and ability to build trust and rapport with constituents. 
  • Intercultural competence: the capacity to recognize, understand and bridge differences in identity and lived experience.
  • Facility with technology, including Google platforms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Deep capacity for logistics and organization.
  • Content knowledge in a subject area relevant to Blake’s curriculum.
