Job Description:

The Blake School seeks an engaged, intelligent and organized Middle School educator with strong leadership skills and a commitment to excellence to serve as its next Assistant Middle School Director for the 2023-24 school year. The Assistant Director must work joyfully and effectively with a full range of students in addition to managing the complex systems that support a positive school climate. The ideal candidate displays a strong work ethic and a lively sense of humor, has a broad understanding of Middle School curriculum and philosophy, and brings substantial Middle School teaching experience. Candidates should demonstrate a professional commitment to pluralism and to developing their own intercultural competence. Blake is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, lived experience and thinking that makes a community strong and empowers students to engage across differences.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications immediately. Blake will typically cover the travel and lodging costs for finalist candidates visiting from out of town.

 

 

Experience and Skills:

The Assistant Director works in collaboration with the Middle School Director, Administrative Assistant and Office Manager to ensure smooth operations of the Middle School, which consists of approximately 340 students in grades 6-8 and 45 faculty and staff.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with, and in support of, the Middle School Director to lead a vibrant division of students, faculty and staff
  • Leads by example to promote Blake’s core values of respect, love of learning (curiosity), integrity and courage through active participation in a growing house system
  • Manages course registration and the student scheduling process 
  • Maintains and communicates a clear weekly calendar, including daily advisory slides
  • Leads weekly grade-level team meetings and works closely with the Middle School Student Support Team (SST)
  • Is actively involved in the daily lives of students through oversight of their academic progress, informal interactions in the hallways and attendance at Middle School events, including academic contests, concerts, plays, athletic competitions and sponsored socials
  • Counsels students, faculty and parents/guardians, as appropriate, to support student needs
  • Coordinates responses to student behavior/discipline issues
  • Assigns faculty duties and oversees completion
  • Plans weekly assemblies
  • Organizes field trip logistics for signature experiences in the division 
  • Assists with afternoon dismissal  
  • Meets monthly as a member of the lead administrative team
  • Represents the Middle School at admissions events and participates in the admissions process by reading student applications and making recommendations 
  • Serves on PK-12 or Middle School committees as requested by the Head of School or Middle School Director 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five years of successful middle school teaching and/or leadership experience 
  • Constructivist educational philosophy
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Deep appreciation for early adolescents and their potential
  • Creative, joyful approach to teaching and learning
  • Detail-oriented and thorough with strong organizational skills
  • Excellent multi-tasking ability; able to work with multiple and changing priorities
